Overview
The Alpha family is TSC's range of wearable mobile printers. They connect to a smartphone, tablet or handheld computer over Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or USB and print on direct thermal receipt paper, labels and, on most models, linerless media. None of them use a ribbon.
The range runs from the cost-effective Alpha-3R 3-inch receipt printer, through the Alpha-30R (Basic and Premium versions) and Alpha-30L 3-inch label and receipt printers, to the 4-inch Alpha-40L and the Alpha-40L RFID. The newer models add Apple-certified MFi Bluetooth 5.0 with NFC tap-to-pair, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi with fast roaming, smart batteries that report their health, TSC Sense Care printhead monitoring and remote management through TSC Console and SOTI Connect. A healthcare version, the Alpha-30LHC, has an antimicrobial, easy-to-disinfect white and grey casing and follows the IEC 60601-1 medical-grade standard for power supply safety. Key features and benefits
- Built to be dropped. The Alpha-30R, Alpha-30L and Alpha-40L are IP54 rated and meet MIL-STD-810 drop and vehicle-vibration standards. An optional protective case raises drop resistance to 2.5 m, which matters for delivery riders and outdoor field staff.
- Full-shift batteries. In TSC's receipt test (one print every 2 minutes over Bluetooth) the Alpha-30L ran for more than 23.5 hours and the Alpha-40L for more than 45 hours on one charge. The Alpha-40L RFID uses a 6,200 mAh smart battery.
- Smart battery and Sense Care. The battery reports capacity, charge state and charge-cycle history, and the printer scans for bad printhead dots, so supervisors can replace a weak battery or head before it fails mid-route.
- Easy pairing. NFC tap-to-pair lets a worker connect a phone or handheld by touching it to the printer, without network log-ins. Dual-band Wi-Fi with fast roaming suits large warehouses.
- Familiar printer languages. TSPL-EZC (with EPL2, ZPL2 and CPCL emulation) or ESC-POS lets most existing mobile apps and POS software print without new code. OPOS drivers and SDKs for Windows, Windows Mobile, Android and iOS help developers integrate.
- Linerless and peeler options. Linerless media cuts liner waste, and the built-in peeler on the Alpha-30L and Alpha-40L presents a label ready to apply.
- Vehicle and forklift kits. 12–24 V and 12–60 V vehicle adaptors, battery eliminators, quick-release vehicle mounts and external fan-fold media holders turn the printer into a forklift or van printer.

How to choose
- Receipts or labels? For mainly receipts and tickets on a budget, the Alpha-3R fits. For labels as well as receipts, choose the Alpha-30R, Alpha-30L or Alpha-40L.
- 3-inch or 4-inch? 3-inch models (72 mm print width) suit receipts, shelf labels and small product labels. Choose the 4-inch Alpha-40L for 4" x 6" style shipping labels and larger logistics labels.
- Alpha-30R Basic or Premium? Premium prints faster (6 ips vs 5 ips) and adds SOTI Connect support; Basic suits smaller fleets managed with TSC Console.
- Bluetooth or Wi-Fi? Bluetooth is simplest for one worker paired with one phone. Wi-Fi suits warehouses where printers receive jobs from a server or WMS.

- Remember: all Alpha models are direct thermal only. If labels must last for years or face heat and sunlight, a thermal transfer desktop or industrial printer is a better fit.
Supplies, spares and service
Alpha printers need direct thermal media sized to fit: 57 mm OD rolls for the Alpha-3R and Alpha-30R and 67 mm OD rolls for the Alpha-30L and Alpha-40L. Use good-quality direct thermal paper or top-coated labels for sharp barcodes and better resistance to fading; see labels and ribbons.
Spare smart batteries, chargers, docking cradles, cases and vehicle kits help keep a fleet working; ask us or browse spares. TSC states the Alpha-30L and Alpha-40L carry a 2-year parts (excluding printhead and platen roller) and labour, return-to-factory warranty, and that their printhead and platen roller are not end-user replaceable, so repairs should go through an authorized partner. Warranty options
Every new TSC and Printronix printer comes with the manufacturer's standard warranty against manufacturing defects. When you buy the printer you can add:
- Extended warranty, 1 year.
- Comprehensive warranty, 3 or 5 years. Comprehensive cover is not offered for 1 year.
Every warranty option must be bought together with the new printer. Comprehensive warranty cannot be added later. It replaces the standard warranty and runs from the printer's invoice date, so the total cover is 3 or 5 years, not 1 + 3 or 1 + 5. After the warranty ends, an annual maintenance contract (AMC) keeps the printer serviced. See extended warranty & care packs.
Frequently asked questions
Can the Alpha-30L or Alpha-40L print thermal transfer?
No. All TSC Alpha mobile printers are direct thermal only, so they do not use a ribbon. Use direct thermal paper or labels.
What is the difference between the Alpha-30L and Alpha-40L?
Both are 203 dpi direct thermal label and receipt printers with the same features. The Alpha-30L has a 2.83-inch (72 mm) print width and weighs 745 g; the Alpha-40L has a 4.09-inch (104 mm) print width, weighs 985 g and lasted over 45 hours in TSC's receipt battery test.
What is the difference between the Alpha-30R Basic and Premium?
The Premium version prints at up to 6 ips versus 5 ips for the Basic, and adds SOTI Connect remote management support. Both are 3-inch, 203 dpi direct thermal printers.
Can I print from an Android or iPhone app?
Yes. The printers connect over Bluetooth (Apple-certified MFi on newer models) or Wi-Fi, and TSC provides SDKs for Android and iOS plus the TSC Mobile Utility app for set-up and troubleshooting.
Which printer languages do the Alpha printers support?
The Alpha-30L and Alpha-40L support TSPL-EZC with EPL2, ZPL2 and CPCL emulation, or ESC-POS. The Alpha-3R supports TSPL-EZ (EPL2, ZPL2), ESC-POS or CPCL emulation.
Does the Alpha-40L RFID support UHF RFID?
Yes. It is RAIN UHF compliant and encodes to GS1 EPC Gen2 v2 / ISO 18000-63. It auto-calibrates for RFID labels, overstrikes labels that fail to encode and works with labels down to 0.625 inch (15.9 mm) long.
Can I mount an Alpha printer on a forklift?
Yes. Vehicle power adaptors, battery eliminators, quick-release vehicle mounts and external fan-fold media holders are available for the Alpha-30L, Alpha-40L and Alpha-40L RFID.
Can I replace the printhead myself?
Not on the Alpha-30L and Alpha-40L. TSC advises returning the unit to an authorized partner for printhead and platen roller replacement.
